Copy this red emoji of an exclamation mark: ❗. Select the symbol, copy it, and paste it into your message or document. It is one character with a bold, attention-getting appearance; the ordinary punctuation mark on your keyboard is a different character.
Exclamation emoji: copy or insert it
For a quick paste, select only ❗ above, without the surrounding sentence. On a computer, use your usual copy and paste shortcuts. On a phone, touch and hold near the symbol, adjust the selection handles until only the symbol is highlighted, and choose Copy. Tap the destination field and choose Paste. The exact selection controls can vary by app.
You can also insert the exclamation mark emoji from a system panel. Put the cursor in a text field first, then use the method for your computer:
- Windows 10 or 11: Press Windows key + period (.). Type a search term such as “exclamation,” then select the single red symbol. Microsoft’s keyboard guide describes opening and searching the panel.
- Mac: Press Control + Command + Space to open Character Viewer. Search or browse for the symbol and select it to insert. Apple lists the shortcut in its Mac keyboard guide.
The exclamation emoji is also available through many phone keyboards. On a phone, open your keyboard’s emoji view and look in its symbols or punctuation section. Search if your keyboard offers that option. If the panel is hard to navigate, copying the character at the top of this page is a perfectly good shortcut. Check the message field after pasting; some apps may apply their own display style.
Pick the character you mean
The red exclamation point emoji is ❗, listed by Unicode as U+2757. Its Unicode character name is HEAVY EXCLAMATION MARK SYMBOL; the emoji chart’s short name is “red exclamation mark.” The code identifies the character even when its artwork looks slightly different across devices. Unicode’s emoji list also identifies these related characters:
- ! is the ordinary exclamation mark, U+0021, used for punctuation in a sentence.
- ‼ is the double exclamation mark, U+203C. It is a separate character, not two copies of the single red symbol.
- ⁉ is the exclamation question mark, U+2049, combining the two punctuation shapes in one character.
For example, “The meeting starts at 2!” uses ordinary punctuation. “❗ Meeting starts at 2” adds a visual marker to the notice. A double mark can suggest stronger emphasis, while the combined question-and-exclamation character can convey surprise or disbelief. Meaning still depends on the words around it and the people reading them.
Check the result before sending
The same emoji of an exclamation point can look heavier, rounder, or differently shaded in another app or operating system. That visual difference does not automatically mean the character changed. If a recipient sees a blank box or an unexpected substitute, their device or app may not support the display; use ordinary punctuation or a short word such as “Important” to make the message clear.
A visual marker can draw attention to a deadline, a changed address, or a safety instruction. Put the actual instruction in words too: “❗ Door locked after 6 p.m.” tells readers what to do with the warning. A row of symbols alone leaves them guessing, and too many markers can make every line compete for attention.
Before sending, choose the single ❗ rather than a neighboring double or combined character. Paste it into the actual destination, check its appearance in the preview, and make sure the surrounding text still makes sense if the artwork looks different on the recipient’s screen.
