QFX to PDF: Turn Bank Transactions Into a Readable Report

Turning a QFX bank download into a readable PDF transaction report.

If you need an official bank statement, download the PDF directly from your bank. If you have only a QFX file and need readable pages, import its transactions into compatible software and print a report to PDF. The result is a report made from the data, not the bank’s original statement.

The steps below use Quicken Classic for Windows and Microsoft Print to PDF. They turn a bank’s QFX download into a PDF you can open and review, provided your bank supports Quicken Web Connect and your Quicken access is current.

QFX file to PDF: What happens to the data?

A QFX file carries financial information such as transactions and balances. It does not contain finished statement pages. Quicken’s Windows help describes QFX as a format for transferring information from a financial institution into Quicken. Changing the filename from .qfx to .pdf does not create a readable document.

For an official document, sign in to the bank and look for Statements or Documents, then download the statement for the required period. That PDF may include bank-provided details and formatting that an imported transaction report will not reproduce. To get a PDF from QFX data instead, first choose the correct account and date range.

Import the bank file

  1. Download the QFX or Web Connect file from your bank for the account and dates you need. Save it where you can find it, such as Downloads. If you already have the file, check its source and the period it covers.
  2. Open Quicken Classic for Windows and back up your existing Quicken data file. In the menu, choose File > File Import > Web Connect (.QFX) File, select the download and open it. Follow the prompts to link it to the correct existing account or create an appropriate account. Quicken’s Web Connect instructions show this import route.
  3. Review the downloaded transactions in the account register and accept them as appropriate. Check the account, dates, payees and amounts. If transactions overlap with an earlier download, investigate apparent duplicates and remove an extra entry only after confirming it is a duplicate.

QFX to PDF conversion depends on a successful import. If the import fails, confirm that the bank offers Quicken Web Connect and that the downloaded file is QFX. Quicken says Web Connect requires online validation and supported, current access. A missing transaction may require a new download with a wider date range or help from the bank; printing cannot supply data that was never imported.

Create and print the report

Open the imported account register or a transaction report in Quicken. Set the date range to the period you need and limit the report to the intended account. Review the displayed columns and totals before printing: a report that includes another account or excludes part of the month will carry that mistake into the output.

To move from QFX to PDF, use the print command for the displayed register or report. Select Microsoft Print to PDF in the print dialog. Check the available page setup and preview; choose landscape orientation if transaction columns are too wide. Print, choose a folder and filename, and save. The PDF shows the imported QFX data; the original file remains separate. Keep both files if you may need to recreate the QFX transaction PDF later.

If the printer is not listed, check your Windows printer settings for Microsoft Print to PDF. If the PDF made from your QFX file has too many columns, adjust the report layout or choose fewer columns. A few moments in preview can prevent a page of neatly clipped amounts.

Check the saved pages

Open the saved PDF of your QFX data and compare it with the Quicken register and the bank’s transaction list. Confirm the account, first and last dates, representative amounts and any displayed totals. Look across every page for cut-off columns or rows split in a way that hides information. If something is missing, adjust the report or print settings and save a new PDF of the QFX transactions.

For a QFX file to PDF report that someone else will receive, also check which account details appear on the pages and share the file through an appropriate secure channel. If the recipient requires the bank-issued statement, obtain that document from the bank instead of presenting the Quicken report as one.
